1st meeting held within the SteelCityZen project

On Wednesday, February 4, 2026, the first meeting within the SteelCityZen project was held. During the meeting, the project goals, previous activities, and planned future activities to be implemented in the coming period were presented to the participants.

The Chamber of Commerce of Zenica-Doboj Canton and the Municipality of Kakanj are project partners in the SteelCityZen project, while the Federal Employment Institute is an associated partner.

In addition to the representatives of the Municipality of Kakanj and the Mayor Mirnes Bajtarević, the meeting was also attended by the Minister of Economy of the Zenica-Doboj Canton, Mr. Samir Šibonjić, the President of the ZDK Chamber of Commerce, Ms. Diana Babić, representatives of public employment services from the municipal, cantonal and federal levels, representatives of the Kakanj Brown Coal Mine, the Kakanj Thermal Power Plant, the Heidelberg Materials company, the director of the "Kemal Kapetanović" Technical High School in Kakanj, Mr. Haris Ljubović, and the director of the Development Center of the Municipality of Kakanj, Mr. Aldin Čatić.

Two key activities have been implemented within the project so far: Survey of local stakeholders and Status quo analysis of the labour market. The survey collected opinions of local and regional participants on the current state of the labour market, their perception of the energy transition process, as well as the most sought-after knowledge and professions on the labour market. The status quo analysis, as another important activity, provided detailed insight into statistical indicators and the current state of the labour market in Kakanj and the wider region. The participants of the meeting were presented with the results of both activities, as well as key findings and conclusions that will serve as a basis for further planning of project interventions.

The participants were particularly interested in the presentation of pilot activities that will be implemented in the Kakanj municipality within the SteelCityZen project. These include the establishment of an Online Platform and a Green Skills Co-working Hub, pilot actions aimed at diversifying the local labour market, developing green competencies, and strengthening entrepreneurship in the context of the green and digital transition. These activities represent a concrete step towards adapting the local economy to new development trends and labour market needs.

This was the first meeting with stakeholders within the SteelCityZen project. Meetings will be organized on a semi-annual basis, and in the future, it is planned to include additional relevant institutions and stakeholders.

The Chamber of Commerce of Zenica-Doboj Canton will regularly inform all stakeholders and the general public about the upcoming activities within the SteelCityZen project via its official website and social channels.
